Product Design
Product Design
Our products are carefully designed by a team of in-house engineers. We're proud to have their expertise in plastic, injection-molded products under our roof.
3D Prototype Printing
The 3D printer at UK often runs 24 hours a day printing out new design ideas and prototype parts. It is fed by 3D models from our CAD design team. In addition it allows us to print specialized assembly fixtures and tools. When designs don’t “feel” quite right, UK engineers can make inexpensive changes and not waste money on costly tooling reworks.
3D Design Using SolidWorks® CAD tools
When Underwater Kinetics first began new products where designed using pages and pages of 2 dimension pencil drawings on large sheets of mylar plastic. It was difficult to design complex surfaces or get a true sense of the product until molds were made and parts assembled. Today, computer aided design and 3D modeling allow our designers to visualize and create a product without ever leaving the world of cyberspace. At UK we use the industry standard Solid Works as our design platform and are able to not only design the component shapes, but stress test them and even perform optical modeling of light beams. Design updates are easily modeled and tested before any metal is cut for the injection mold.
Product Testing
We still believe that the best test for a product is to try breaking it in the field. New products are given to field testers for real wold testing. In addition one might find an engineer throwing products around in the parking lot, pushing them down the stairs or dropping them off the roof. For serious testing we have a large and small light sphere for brightness testing. We can water test a light to 160 feet or send them out for a trip to the Mariana Trench if necessary (almost). In coming components are tested for dimensional, structural or electrical by quality inspector. Finally our quality control program is evaluated every year by the TÜV for compliance with the European Directive 2014/34/EU. We are also audited quarterly by UL® and ETL® for OSHA compliance of our certified products with relevant standards for Hazardous Locations,.
